Galle is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka and is located around 120km from the capital city of Colombo towards the south-western part of the island. It is the provincial capital and the largest city of the Southern Province. For centuries, Galle has been one of the main ports of the island under the Portuguese and Dutch colonial rulers. The Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is its most distinct landmark. Other notable landmarks in Galle include the city's natural harbour, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral, the Galle International Cricket Stadium and Amangalla, the historic luxury hotel.
