The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, once the ancestral home of one of Sri Lanka’s famous writers and poets Martin Wickramasinghe, is located in Koggala, about 15km from the city of Galle. The museum was established by the Martin Wickramasinghe Trust and is set amidst a lush ecosystem planted with countless varieties of trees and shrubs where birdlife flourish.
While the house gives visitors a glimpse into the childhood years of Martin Wickramasinghe, the surrounding areas paint a picture of what life would have been like for the young boy growing up in Koggala, an adventurous life that inspired some of his future writing work. The museum is a fascinating collection of artifacts vividly portraying the history of Sri Lankan folk culture during years gone by. They include Buddhist artifacts as well as those related to agriculture, agro industry, fishing, pottery, metal craft, folk dances, religious ceremonies and many others.
