Koggala

Located around 140km south of the capital city of Colombo, Koggala is a small coastal town that has one of the longest beaches in Sri Lanka. One side of Koggala is the reef while the other side is the large Koggala Lake which is fed by the numerous tributaries of the Koggala Oya. One of the most distinct features of Koggala are the stilt fishermen who catch small fish while balancing themselves on a pole erected a few meters offshore. Koggala is also famous as the birthplace of renowned Sri Lankan author Martin Wickramasinghe. The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum was created to pay homage to his arts and highlight popular traditions of the town.
